The Rower's Resource Library: Clubs, Erging & Community
The outside resources our PTs actually point Bay Area rowers to — a serious club scene hiding in plain sight
Updated October 20262 minute read
The vetted external resources worth a rower's time: the Bay Area's junior and masters club ecosystem, the governing body, the erg company whose machine defines winter training, the sport's news commons, and the communities where rowing lives online — with a note on what each is genuinely good for and where physical therapy picks up what they can't.

A note before the links: these are external sites we don't control, and none of them pay to be here. Where something costs money, we say so.
The Bay Area club ecosystem
Bay Area rowing is bigger than most locals realize — championship junior programs, year-round masters squads, and learn-to-row pipelines on the Oakland Estuary, the Marin shoreline, Redwood City's channels, and Lexington Reservoir:
- Oakland Strokes — the Oakland Estuary's powerhouse junior program, a national contender for decades.
- Marin Rowing Association — Greenbrae's juniors-and-masters institution with one of the deepest masters programs on the West Coast.
- NorCal Crew — the Redwood City junior program rowing out of the Peninsula's channels.
- Los Gatos Rowing Club — juniors and masters on Lexington Reservoir in the South Bay hills.
Yearly calendars at these clubs run hard — if your winter is an erg block and your spring is selection, the load guide is how the season stays sustainable, and crew parents should read the junior crew guide.
The sport's institutions
- USRowing — the national governing body: clubs, safety standards, and the competitive pathway.
- row2k — the sport's news commons: results, features, and the daily pulse of US rowing.
The machine in every garage
- Concept2 — maker of the erg that defines winter training, with genuinely good technique resources, workout libraries, and the online logbook. The erg is also where most rowing injuries brew — pair the logbook with erg technique and setup and honest meter accounting.
Community
- r/Rowing — the sport's everyday community: erg scores, technique checks, and club questions. Treat medical threads with the usual forum skepticism.
What the internet can't do
Every resource above works best on a spine and ribcage prepared for the sport's loads. A back that aches deeper into every erg block, a chest wall that hurts to breathe into, or a teen with focal back pain needs an evaluation, not another training plan — the traffic-light rules tell you how urgent, and what PT costs covers the money. If you're local, browse rowing-friendly PTs across the Bay Area; either way, here's how to pick a good one.
