The neck and jaw share close nerve and muscle connections, so problems in the upper neck can refer pain to the jaw and face — and neck tension and posture can worsen TMJ symptoms. When jaw pain is partly driven by the neck, treating both works far better than treating the jaw alone. Physical therapy that addresses the upper neck, posture, and jaw together helps most people.
What is cervicogenic TMJ pain?
It's jaw or facial pain that's referred from or strongly influenced by the upper neck. The upper-neck and jaw systems are neurologically linked, so one affects the other.
Symptoms
Common features are jaw or facial pain alongside neck stiffness or pain, symptoms worse with sustained posture (desk/phone), and jaw pain that improves when the neck is treated.
What causes it / risk factors
Forward-head posture, upper-neck joint or muscle dysfunction, stress, and clenching that ties neck and jaw tension together.

A PT recognizes the neck contribution by examining the upper neck and seeing how it influences jaw symptoms.
